1) Geological studies
   Thanks to high petroleum potential of this province special attentions are paid to this territory which part of tectono-sedimentary Zagros zone.
   The historical background of geological studies starts from nineteen centuries for which a tremendous number of geological reports are available. Foreign-Iranian geologist prepares them and they are kept in documentation center of NIOC. These reports and maps are have totally been compiled and published in the form of 1:250000 and 1:100000 maps.
   Shahre-Kord, Dezful, Dehloran, Ramhormuz, Ahwaz, Behbahan and Abadan 1:250000 quadrangles cover the whole territory of this province.
   Geological (1:100000) maps of this province are 28 maps which have been published by NIOC.
   In addition to the aforementioned 1:250000 and 1:100000 maps many thematic studies in accordance to development programs of this province have been carried out of which following reports are conserved in the document center of Geological Survey of Iran:
   - A report on the engineering geology of Ahwaz, Geological Survey of Iran, 1986
   - A report on the seismo-tectonics of Dezful depression, Geological Survey of Iran, 1991
   - A report on the petrography and mineralogy of phosphatic rocks in Ramhormuz area, Phosphate Exploration Project, 1988
  
   2) Exploration studies
   Khuzestan province due to its geological characters has minor metallic resources, therefore exploration effort have been directed toward the better recognition of nonmetallic resources. It is anticipated that this procedure will continue.
   Systematic exploration has never been started in this province, because of the lack of any metamorphic and igneous rocks. Exploration efforts were all of thematic nature for the exploration of nonmetallic deposits. Industry and Mine Organization of the province and supervision of a few experts from Geological Survey of Iran mainly organize these efforts.
