The
coelacanth
It appeared about 380 million years ago (about 150
million years before the dinosaurs appeared). Its
scientific name is Latimeria chalumnae.
Body:
It
is about 5 feet (1.5 m) long, has a skeleton that is
kind of a protection. It has a three-lobed back, teeth
are only in the front of the mouth, and a jaw hinged to
the head in a way that lets it open very wide.
Coelacanth means "empty spinal column;" it was given
this name because its spinal column (backbones) is
hollow. The coelacanth gives birth to live young.
In other words,
it is Viviparous.
