NEPTUN’S ATMOSPHERE AND THE GREAT DARK SPOT

THE ATMOSPHERE

Neptune has thick atmosphere, made of 74% hydrogen, 25% helium and about 1% methane. Its atmosphere combines into the planet’s mantle. Atmosphere of Neptune got icy clouds with so many storms. Due to tremendous winds that is ocurring are around the planet, these features changes so fast.

Fastest winds whip in Neptune among other planets (fastest in solar system). The deep blue color of Neptune is because of icy atmosphere, so that methane absorbs red light.

THE GREAT DARK SPOT

The Earth-sized hurricanes in methane atmosphere of Neptune make great dark spot that they vary greatly over time in size, shape and location. Sometimes these spots disappear occasionally. The direction of storms are clockwise Voyager 2 has measured the speed of winds, wiping near the great dark spot about 1500 miles per hour (2400 kph). They are strongest winds in a solar system.

NEPTUNE’S MOON

There are three main moons called Nereid, Proteus and Triton and five smaller ones in Neptune. Triton and Proteus rotate nearby Neptune, but Nereid is in farther orbit.

Ttriton is the coldest one in solar system and Nereid has the most eccentric orbit in solar system.
