Side effects of   Earthquakes

In most of the cases, damages and injuries occur after the main shock.

The table below contains some information about this fact.

Damages

Influence

Leaching

Vibration of the quakes compresses soil grains and water pressure increases in joints. Soil flows like a liquid therefore.

Amplitude displacement

Quakes produce slips in risky areas.

Tsunami

Quakes and submarine volcanoes produce waves with small amplitudes. The amplitude increases as the waves get close to the coast and cause damages there.

Other damages

Gas pipes explosion and power line spikes result in firing. On the other hand, roads stuck and destruction of dams result in floods.

Building designs based on special codes and standards (based on seismicity maps), public awareness and organizing rescue teams reduce quake losses.
