Along the duty of GSI to identify mineral potentials of Iran, the Kan-Azin Consulting Engineers started a project for prospecting phosphate resources in the Mazandaran Province, based on a contract with GSI.
At the first step, after office studies, required maps and reports were collected and then the exploration plan was designed. Possible phosphate-bearing horizons were identified and their exposures in the province were mapped and explored. Soltaniyeh, Mila, Lashkarak, Jeyrud, and KhoshYeylaq formations, Gorgran complex and Upper Cretaceous limestone were suitable formations. 29 sections, totally up to 42 Km were surveyed in February 2008.
The Cretaceous layers may be an exploration target in the province. The Soltaniyeh Formation may be considered again for feasibility studies, after increase of phosphate price. The other formations have not suitable potential.
